Born in Wales, Tara was the daughter of a professor of computer science and an antique dealer. Most of her life was spent surrounded by computers and programming and she had a natural knack for it. Her father often dragged her into work to sit her in front of thousands of 1s and 0s to read coding that she seemed to understand as well as she did see spot run.
She had always considered herself a bit of an amazon, hot headed, compulsive and without a lot of impulse control the avid fencer spent a lot of time with a blade in one hand. She was stubborn, arrogant and most of the time unreasonable. She wasn’t shy, she was aggressive, painfully so in a lot of ways and so her parents tried to shove her into activities were she could channel her energy into while still keeping her on hand for the coding business. She began to see one as work and the other as play, even as a seven year old child.
The girl was insanely bright, but her genius was counterbalanced by her brashness and personality. She was reckless, arrogant and stubborn beyond belief as she grew older. Though her father often dragged her into his world of numbers, as a teenager she found ways to make that world work to her advantage. She built programs to amuse herself and found herself coding viruses just for fun before she would head off to burn the excess steam in fencing touranments. She rotated between hacking and fencing, taking it into herself to enjoy the battle and the thrill of the fight before taking her battles online.
Moving to the states when she was sixteen, following high school she went to MIT as a way to appease her father and use her natural born talent in coding, without hacking the systems and changing her grades just for fun. It wasn’t drive or dedication that got her through MIT at the top of her class, it was luck and pure talent that got her that far and she was more than aware of it. Numbers, coding, it all sang like a melody to her and she had no complaints though her social life left something to be desired.
She was a rebel and horribly arrogant, things she couldn’t take care of in cyberspace she took care of on the fencing mat. Her friends figured she was just wired differently, and she didn’t argue. Once she graduated from MIT she got a job at CALTECH because of her genius with coding and writing programs. If they could only get her to control her temper, the world would be a much better place. But her impulsive nature made her a target.
But her fighting nature did make the idea of the Grid more intriguing. After all, it’s better than Warcraft.

She grew quiet at the comment, letting her thoughts drift off as she knew he was right. He would have loved this place but at the same time, she wasn’t ready to leave him. The touch of his hand to her cheek had her lifting her head, leaning into the calluses she hadn’t realized she’d missed. When they had been young she’d never thought about how she might feel about Nike. She’d always loved Dodge, the way he was, he was wild and uncontrollable. But Nike had always been solid, secure and exactly what she’d expected him to be. His words were like knives in a way, the tiny duchess stood there covered in dust and dirt from the streets. But she couldn’t really hide the polish well could she.
Her fingers moved to find his against her cheek, holding his hand against it before she let out a small sigh. Closing her eyes as she listened, but it didn’t that it didn’t hurt her to hear it. The truth, Nike had always been the realist in her life. But it was his promise of being together again that urged a small smile, on a sigh she reopened her eyes and looked up at him. How had she—when had she started to care about him so much? Had it been before? When they were young and while Dodge was the fun one, she had found security that Nike wouldn’t let anything bad happen? Really she had no idea and doubted she ever would. But the smells around her drew her back to another time, had her wrapping her own fingers around his. There was so much that she wanted to say to him that she wasn’t’ sure she could find words for. She’d said she couldn’t say good-bye but he was right, there was almost no way that she could go with him. It made her chuckle just a little bit.
”Would be easier if I was really a normal girl, wouldn’t it?” she pondered quietly, looking up at him as she found herself smiling, but it was sad. ”If I wasn’t who I am, I don’t think there would be much stopping us would there?” Sighing she moved a bit closer, her fingers still curled around his hand as she scanned his stone features. What had time really done to both of them? It had made them both harder, older and she would never had seen reasoning in him telling her that they would part ways when she’d been young. Though even now she was finding herself wanting to just run away like she always had.
She pressed her lips to his palm, turning her head a moment before she nodded her head, accepting what he said even it everything inside of her demanded more. Demanded that she take the risks, but it wouldn’t work. She was a Duchess, and the only heir to her family. No matter how much she didn’t want it, no matter if she wanted to spend so many days just running with Nike and not looking back. It wouldn’t happen. ”Write me often, as much as you can…” think of me while you are out there where I want to be, she almost asked him. Finding herself smiling when she realized that was all she wanted. ”If I was someone else, I wouldn’t let you leave me behind, Nike. I’d sneak onto your ship and not let you leave me behind. But, you’re right, and I hate that you are.”
